The digital potentiometer (DP) allows many of the applications ofmechanical trimming potentiometers to be replaced by a solid-statesolution. The digital potentiometer has several benefits over amechanical potentiometer, including compact size, freedom from shockor vibration, and the ability to withstand oil, dust, temperature extremes,and moisture.The interface of a DP allows it to be electronically controlled by amicroprocessor or microcontroller so that the user can adjust systemparameters quickly and precisely. Also, automatic system initializationand calibration at the point of manufacture can be provided to increaseaccuracy and timeliness on the production line.
