Industrial environments present a formidable challenge tothe electronic system designer. In parTIcular, high electricalnoise levels and often excessive common mode voltagesmake safe, precise measurement difficult. One of the bestways to overcome these problems is by the use of isolatedmeasurement techniques. Typically, these approaches uTIlizetransformers or opto isolators to galvanically isolate theinput terminals of the signal condiTIoning amplifier from itsoutput terminal. This breaks the common ground connecTIonand eliminates noise and dangerous common mode voltages.The conflicting requirements for good accuracy andtotal input/output galvanic isolation requires unusual circuittechniques. A relatively simple isolated signal conditionerappears in Figure 1.
