The thermal characteristics of linear regulators depend ontheir operating environment and the system’s loadrequirements. It is essential that the regulators operatingtemperature be minimized to reduce stress on the silicon andthe package. This article reviews the basic thermalcalculations for single and dual output regulators, introducesthe use of heatsinks and provides guidelines for using thecopper on a PCB as a heatsink.
