The PS700 is a cost-effecTIve, highly accurate IC thatmeasures, stores and reports all of the criTIcalparameters required for rechargeable battery monitoringwith a minimum of external components. It preciselymeasures charge/discharge current as well as voltageand temperature of a battery pack. In addiTIon, thePS700 accurately accumulates both charge anddischarge current as independent parameters.Temperature history can also be maintained forcalculaTIng self-discharge effects.The PS700 integrates a highly accurate 16-bit integratingA/D converter that performs current measurementto within ±0.5% error. On-chip counters precisely trackbattery charge/discharge and temperature history. Alsoincluded are an on-chip voltage regulation circuit, noncrystaltime base and on-chip temperature sensor. Theoperating voltage range of the PS700 is optimized toallow a direct interface to 1 or 2-series Li Ion/Li Polybattery packs. 512 bytes of general purpose nonvolatileEEPROM storage are provided to store factoryprogrammed, measured and user defined parameters.Efficient communication is provided through anindustry standard SMBus/I2C™ compatible 2-wirecommunications interface. This interface allows thehost to determine accurate battery status for effectivesystem power management and for communication tothe end user. A battery management solution utilizingthe PS700 delivers both space and total systemcomponent cost savings for a wide variety of batteryoperated applications.
