The white backlight required tobring out the color in these screens is mostoften provided by white LEDs. In applicaTIonspowered by a one-cell Li-ion battery,charge pumps or boost converters have beenrequired to drive these LEDs because oftheir high forward voltage (4 V typical). Aswhite-LED technology has advanced, theforward voltage required has significantlydropped. Today, white LEDs such as Nichia’sNHSW046 or NSSW100C are available witha typical forward voltage of less than 3 V.The lower forward voltage eliminates theneed for voltage boosting, permitting theuse of linear regulation topologies thatreduce costs and solution size and increaseefficiency across the battery-discharge range. Figure 1compares the efficiency and battery voltage of the TexasInstruments TPS7510x and a typical series LED boost converter.
