LED technology is widely used for backlighTIngapplications in the majority of today’s portableproducts. Strong requirements such as low powerconsumption, low quiescent current, reduced PCBarea and maximum battery life are driving LEDpower management solutions to become highlyintegrated. System designers are facing significantchallenges as they must consider many LED powermanagement options when designing LED drivers forportable devices such as PDAs and cell phones.Meeting the overall design requirements oflonger battery life in the smallest PCB area at thelowest cost would not be possible to achieve withoutintegrated LED power management solutions.This article will describe and explain the designconsiderations for implementing a highly integratedlinear LED driver to replace a conventional boostconverter for backlighting applications in PDAs orcell phones.
