A common function in many systems is toconvert parallel data into a serial data stream.A microcontroller may be programmed to shifta byte in a register out to a port, but this is arelatively slow procedure. A simplepre-loadable shift register could perform thebasic conversion. However, for the function tobe complete, additional circuitry to performhandshaking or control of the process isrequired. The entire function can be made tofit into a low cost Programmable LogicDevice (PLD), including control circuitrytailored to meet specific applicationrequirements.
